Bettiah’s Mircha chura is sweet.
Bettiah is the headquarters of West Champaran district which is one of the largest cities located on the Indo-Nepal border. The word ‘Bettiah’ is derived from ‘cane’ which was once grown here on a large scale but now this town is not known from the cane. The first thing that comes to mind as soon as the name Bettiah comes, is Bettiah Raj, the majestic palace of the Maharaja and the very famous Mircha Chuda. Even though its name is Mircha but its taste is very sweet. Bettiah Raj was the second largest zamindari in the British period, with an area of 1800 square miles. It is said that at that time the rent was Rs 20 lakh. Mahatma Gandhi started the Satyagraha movement by staying at Hazari Mal Dharamshala in Bettiah in this city situated in the ancient foothills of the Harha river.
Only two Bihari brands of chura are mircha chuda and Katarni chura.
We all know that paddy is cultivated on a large scale in Bihar and Bettiah’s Mircha Chura is very famous along with Bhagalpuri Katarni chuda. Bettiah’s Nautan, Majholia, Chanpatia, Narkatiaganj, Sikta, Manatand, Ramnagar and Bagaha, together with both the regions, have bumper production of mirchai paddy and after this the mircha chuda spreads its fragrance all over the state. Mircha paddy is the most favorite paddy of Bettiah region. Even though new experiments are going on regarding its production, but even today when people living in the country and abroad come back, they definitely take mircha rice and bangles from Bettiah. Relatives living far away also demand mircha chuda and rice as a gift from their relatives on festivals and important occasions. From this it can be easily guessed that how much affection people have towards the aroma and taste of mircha.
